February 17: It’s been a while since we’ve updated this page, but now there’s such amazing and promising news, it’s going above the original story. From FoxNews’ report, Gabrielle Giffords, now in a rehab facility in Houston, is able to talk, laugh, recognize visitors and amazingly, when asked by her husband how she was feeling, she replied, “Better.” This was one of the first words she’s said since being shot in the head back on January 8th.
She recognizes everybody, has been mouthing the words to “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”, all the while improving daily during intensive rehab therapy sessions. Doctors are unsure if she’ll be able to make the trip to Cape Canaveral, Florida to watch her husband take command of the space shuttle mission in April, but she’s already beaten the odds and shown remarkable recovery that feelings are optimistic.
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) is currently fighting for her life, the target of a psychotic 22yr old who lived around the corner from the shopping plaza where she was shot. She was shot in the head, the bullet going straight through one temple and exiting through her forehead. Reports say she was conscious at the scene and able to communicate with rescue workers, then later was aware and communicating with the doctors and surgeons when she reached the hospital. Doctors and trauma surgeons are optimistic that she will recover at this point.
UPDATE (2:54am January 9): Giffords is out of surgery, for now, and in the intensive care unit at the University of Arizona’s hospital. They checked her brain for any bleeding and cauterized the blood vessels they’d cut through during surgery. Giffords will remain under anesthesia for the next three to four days, as is typical with most brain surgery patients, especially in a gunshot wound to the head situation. At that point, doctors will be able to make a fuller assessment of Giffords and her condition, and how and what her recovery may be – a timeline of weeks to years.
UPDATE (12:30pm January 14): Giffords opened one eye yesterday when being visited by two of her close friends from Capitol Hill. They were sharing stories with Giffords when she started to show that she was listening by squeezing the hand of her friend and then rubbing the hand with her thumb. She then struggled to open her right eye (right now her left eye is bandaged) and strained to focus on her friends, husband and doctors who were in the room with her. The doctor asked her to give him the thumbs up if she could understand him and she slowly raised her arm to do so. This has been absolutely nothing short of miraculous. On Tuesday, she began moving her arms and breathing on her own, though she’s still on a ventilator as a precaution.
UPDATE (1:11pm January 17): Giffords is off the ventilator and breathing on her on. Nothing short of a miracle!!
UPDATE (12:11pm January 21): Giffords is being moved to a rehab facility today in Houston. Yesterday, she was taken outside for fresh air, browsed on her iPad, and was attempting to speak to her husband (he believes), though she’s unable to at the moment because of the tracheotomy she had when taken off the ventilator.
In thoughts of those who have died, including a nine year old girl (who was part of her school’s student council and was attending the event to see how our government worked [according to her uncle].) and a federal judge (a friend of Giffords who stopped by to see her and wish her well), please pray, light a candle, whatever it is you do. This isn’t about politics. It’s about people. Our thoughts are with the families of everyone affected by this awful tragedy.
