People all around Facebook (and other social media I’m sure) are vilifying and shaming this Texas high school student who gave birth to a stillborn baby in the girls’ bathroom, then left the baby’s body in the bathroom.

This girl was very likely going through all of this alone, and even if she did have someone with her, she’s still human – I fucking guarantee you she was scared out of her mind. She had to be absolutely terrified. Completely. Why wouldn’t she be?

She goes through labor, delivers her baby, only to discover her baby is stillborn. You’ve got a stone heart if you can’t see what an emotional blow that is in an already highly emotionally-charged situation.

A teenager is supposed to make clearheaded decisions then? An adult – a healthy, rational thinking adult – wouldn’t be capable of making the simple decisions necessary.

We should not shame this girl. We should not be saying “well then you should never have opened your legs.” We should not be looking for excuses.

We need to look at facts. This is Texas – a state that doesn’t like the idea of sex ed, seems to think maybe if we don’t talk about it, it doesn’t matter – so its teens have a high STD rate and pregnancy rate and aren’t as informed about their options, like safe drop offs.

Sadly, this teen did not have that option either. Her baby was likely born dead. She didn’t know what to do and she was scared.

Let’s offer her now what she wasn’t offered before: help, and hope.
